ASH WEDNESDAY AND LENT

The beginning of Lent is marked by many with ashes hence the name Ash Wednesday. The ashes symbolize both death and repentance. There is a verse in the book of Daniel that links fasting to ashes and some scholars believe this is the origin of the Lenten practice.

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, and Ash Wednesday is always 46 days before Easter Sunday which is April 9th this year. The observance of Lent spans 40 days (not including the 6 Sundays) and ends on the Saturday before Easter. This 40 day period represents the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness. It is a time of personal reflection in preparation for the resurrection of Christ Easter Sunday!

Use the Church Calendar to Ensure Event Success

If you or your group are planning an event, an important first step will be to get your event on the church calendar. This will ensure that members can easily find the details of your event (time, place, purpose), and also ensure that the location in the church you are planning to use is available. Once your event is on the calendar, the location for your event is reserved for your use.

To get an event on the church calendar, contact Annamarie Haskell, office manager.

VIEW the church calendar.

Holy Spirit, as the waves break on the shore of Virginia Beach, so break through our lives, our church and our community. Give us new ideas, new hope and new power to achieve your possibilities. Lord, we surrender our lives and our church to you. We trust that you are who you say that you are and that you will do exceedingly and abundantly more than we can ask or imagine. Amen.
